The Book Lady: Germaine Chau and Her Love for Books

When Germaine Chau first came across a call for volunteers with ABC Head Start Society in a dinner theatre program back in 2004, she had no idea it would lead to a 16-year journey with the organization that would touch the lives of thousands of children. Known affectionately as “The Book Lady,” Germaine has become a beloved figure at ABC Head Start Society, not just for her tireless volunteering, but for the thousands of books she has lovingly collected, cleaned, and donated to children across Edmonton.
A Volunteer by Heart, Not Just Chance
Germaine’s journey with ABC began first at our Eastwood location in 2004. At the time, she was working at IBM but made a bold decision to switch to a four-day workweek just so she could volunteer every Friday morning. Her afternoons were spent mentoring children through Big Brothers Big Sisters, a testament to her deep commitment to youth.
Over the years, she brought her warmth and energy into the classrooms at ABC Abbott, Delwood, and Killarney sites. Though she served on ABC’s Board from 2010 to 2012, she found her true calling in the classroom where she could connect directly with children and teachers. “I didn’t feel super useful on the board,” she says with a laugh. “I felt more useful working with the kids.”
Where did it all start!
Germaine’s love for books began at home, reading nightly to her two children. That passion paved its way into a mission to ensure every child had access to books of their own. Around three years ago, she became involved with ABC’s Literacy Backpack Day, a now cherished tradition where children receive books to take home.
Germaine doesn’t just donate books. She curates them. She visits thrift stores in Edmonton and Sherwood Park two to three times a week, learning when new stock arrived and which titles resonated with kids. “It’s real-life data analysis,” she jokes. She carefully inspects each book, page by page, cleaning and organizing them with meticulous care to ensure the kids get the highest quality books as possible.
Since 2016, she has donated 7,800 books per year, all stored in her home.
A Life of Giving
Germaine’s generosity extends far beyond ABC. She has mentored eight children through Big Brothers Big Sisters, with three still in her life today. She has volunteered with Santa’s Anonymous for over 20 years, served on the board of the Edmonton Lifelong Learners Association, and currently volunteers with Sport Central and the Rotary Northeast Club where she has helped organize free book giveaways.
Her motivation is simple. “I’m having fun, and I know what I’m doing helps someone. That’s good enough.”
Advice from our Book Lady
When asked what she would say to someone thinking about volunteering with ABC, Germaine doesn’t hesitate.
“Just try it.”
For all of us at ABC, her story is a powerful reminder that small acts of care like reading a book, sharing a smile, or giving your time can create impact that last a lifetime.
