How do I choose a school that is right for my child?

Registration opens on February 2nd for the 2021-2022 school year so if you have a child that will be 5 years old by December 31, 2021, then it’s time for you to choose a school! It’s an important decision, one that needs to consider factors like your child’s needs and personality, convenience and location and your values and views on education.

Is your child very active? Artistic? Academic? Do they like structure and rote memorization or are they more creative with a curious and inquisitive mind? Do they have a diagnosis or behavioural concerns? Are you looking for a school with an option for a second language or would you like a school that has a cultural or religious focus?

Start by looking at your neighbourhood designated school. You can do this by visiting Find a School Tool - Edmonton Public Schools (epsb.ca) or Edmonton Catholic Schools | School Finder Tool` (ecsd.net) and typing in your address. Attend the Open House (online for this year!) and explore their website. If that doesn’t seem like a good fit for your child then start exploring other options by searching for different program options.

Your options for schools in Edmonton are primarily Edmonton Public Schools or Edmonton Catholic Schools. There are also a few chartered schools available and they will charge tuition.  Bussing options vary by school, your location from the school, whether or not that school is your designated school, and if your child has special needs. Make friends with the secretary at the school you are inquiring about and find out if you qualify!

What is most important to remember is that no matter what school you decide on, you are your child’s most important advocate. Be open and honest and your child’s teacher and the administration at the school about your child’s needs, and stay involved in the school as much as possible to build relationships with the staff at the school. Remember that you are all working towards the same goal of helping your child succeed!
