Thursday, October 11, 2007 was the media event and the kick off to the 2007 Scarecrow Festival. Both classes from our Abbott site were on hand to “count down” to the start of the competition. Miss Canada was a welcome guest at the Scarecrow Festival this year. Representatives from several media outlets, Edmonton Eskimo wives, Northlands and McDonalds competed in the Scarecrow decorating contest a fun and hotly contested event. There were two winners this year - one chosen by the children of ABC Head Start and the second by Miss Canada. The winners of the Children’s Choice award was Spiderman decorated by The Edmonton Sun. Miss Canada’s choice was a lady scarecrow decorated by CTV. The children were made to feel very special in many ways - participating in games and festival activities along with a special lunch. The first day of the festival, Friday the 12th, started with Global TV’s Lorraine Mansbridge broadcasting live on site with the children from local schools on had to participate. At 9:00 am the doors officially opened and the fun began. Friday was a special day this year as it was Family Friendly Friday, admission was 2 for the price of 1. School groups, daycares, seniors and families with preschool children cam to enjoy the attractions with smaller crowds than on the weekend. A record number of people came through the doors on this day.
Saturday was a busy day with the Ronald McDonald Hop ending the day’s festivities at 5:00. the doors opened again at 6:00 for the Monster Ball which includes a dinner and both a live and silent auction. Couples enjoyed the after dinner hours dancing to the tunes of “The classics.” Great fun was had by all, especially those successful bidders who went home with some great purchases. Sunday was the last day of the festival. It was a time for over 1000 dedicated volunteers and 25 steering committee members to reflect on the success of Scarecrow Festival 2007. A big thanks to Bernice Gordeyko, 2007 Scarecrow Festival chairperson, and her committee for another excellent job of organizing this wonderful event.
Miss Canada, Alesia Fieldberg, was on hand throughout the festival adding her own special magic to the event. She especially enjoyed time she spent with the children at the media event on Thursday. She was on-site at the festival off day Friday and Saturday making herself available for pictures, autographs and media interviews, always with a big smile . Saturday evening Alesia and her mother, Bonnie (who was her official escort) were special guests at the Monster Ball. Alesia graciously spoke about her interest in ABC Head Start and thanks the attendees for their support.
